A rare and ecologically rich landscape in British Columbia's South Okanagan has been permanently protected.
The Nature Trust of BC secured the 77-acre Marron River Grasslands with support from BC Parks Foundation and a community of partners and donors. Together, they have helped protect one of the province's most endangered ecosystems—native grasslands—which cover less than one per cent of British Columbia but support more species at risk than any other ecosystem in the province.
The property provides important habitat for American badger, western rattlesnake, Lewis's woodpecker and pallid bat. It also protects a valuable stretch of riparian habitat along the Marron River, provides winter range for mule deer and supports biodiversity in a region facing increasing pressure.
Protecting places like this takes collaboration. This project reflects what is possible when organizations, communities and supporters come together around a shared goal: ensuring these landscapes remain intact and thriving for generations to come.
