Overview

Inspiring people to explore, experience, and care for BC’s parks

Plan Your Next Adventure

Through the Discover Parks program—a joint effort between BC Parks Foundation and BC Parks—Ambassadors are placed in parks across the province to spark curiosity, share knowledge, and help visitors connect more deeply with nature.

Interpretation has long been part of BC’s park story, inspiring generations through programs like Jerry’s Rangers. When funding cuts impacted those traditions in the early 2000s, BC became one of the only park systems in North America without consistent in-park interpreters. Discover Parks is renewing that legacy.

Whether it’s meeting an Ambassador on the trail, exploring a Discovery Centre, or joining a self-guided Discover Trail, every interaction helps people understand and care for these remarkable places.

Goals & Objectives

Discover Parks focuses on four key goals that guide our efforts to connect people with nature, foster understanding, and inspire stewardship.

Enhance park experiences for visitors

Provide friendly, knowledgeable Ambassadors who offer tips, share ecology, and spark curiosity on trails, beaches, and in campgrounds.

Offer engaging education and interpretation

Bring BC’s natural and cultural heritage to life through guided programs, pop-up talks, and interactive displays in Discovery Centres.

Create accessible self-guided learning opportunities

Use inclusive signage, virtual tours, audio guides, and videos along Discover Trails so visitors can explore at their own pace.

Inspire care and stewardship for BC’s parks

Connect every interaction to the bigger picture—showing visitors how they can help protect the places they love for generations to come.

"Everyone gets excited about the trees. But I like to show them the tiny Sundew. It’s what’s at your feet as much as what’s above your head."

Meet Annabelle and Katie, Discover Parks Ambassadors who spend their summer days inviting park visitors to slow down, look closer, and reconnect with the natural world. At Cypress Park, one of BC’s busiest provincial parks, they lead guided walks, answer questions, and share small but powerful moments of awe—from towering yellow-cedars to the alien-like Sundew, a tiny carnivorous plant you’d miss if you didn’t know to look. Together, Annabelle and Katie are part of a growing movement to bring nature interpretation back to BC’s parks, and to make sure everyone feels they belong.
