25x25 Visits Silver Star Provincial Park
April 10, 202425x25 Visits Silver Star Provincial Park
The Vernon Outdoors Club and the BC Parks Foundation teamed up to teach almost 30 children and their parents, many of them new to Canada, how to snowshoe at Silver Star Provincial Park last week.
Volunteers led small groups of kids and their families on a short, fun, treasure hunt to find BC Park’s Jerry the Moose in Moose Junction.
The event was free, including snowshoe rentals and hot chocolate, thanks to a grant from the BCPF’s 25 Weeks of Adventure.
Vernon Outdoors Club organizer Sue Ghattas says it was an unforgettable day. “It was the fulfillment of a big team effort. Between the BC Parks Foundation, our club and Silver Star, we were able to give kids and their families, many of them from Syria and Ukraine, a chance to fall in love with nature.” Sue says almost every single child asked to come back again.
25x25 is a multi-year campaign to protect 25 per cent of BC’s land and water by 2025. It also inspires all British Columbians to help collect 25 million observations of life, enjoy 25 parks or outdoor activities responsibly and safely, and spend a minimum of 2.5 hours a week outside, getting healthy by nature.
Thank you – for creating an unforgettable day for a wonderful group of children in Vernon.

“BC's parks are quite simply wonders. They are places of majesty and beauty. They are gathering places for families and communities. They are engines of our economy in attracting millions of tourists to our province. And they are sanctuaries to millions of plants and animals, creating the biodiversity that gives British Columbians the clean air and clean water so vital to our healthy existence.
