About this conservation project

More than 780 hectares of mountain forest in West Vancouver have been permanently protected through the creation of a new municipal park—an area nearly twice the size of Stanley Park.

The new park protects forests surrounding the Old Growth Conservancy and forms an important connection between Cypress Park, the Capilano and Seymour watersheds, and other protected lands on the North Shore. Together, these areas create one of the largest protected landscapes anywhere in the world so close to a major city.

To help care for the park into the future, BC Parks Foundation launched the Cypress Hollyburn Legacy Fund with a $3-million matching gift from the Wilson 5 Foundation.

Why is Cypress Hollyburn important?

This landscape protects sensitive ecosystems, old-growth trees, and wildlife habitat while providing opportunities for people to experience nature close to home.

For decades, local residents and community groups have worked to protect these mountains. In 1990, citizens successfully opposed a proposed golf course, leading to the creation of the Old Growth Conservancy. Today, organizations including the West Vancouver Streamkeepers, Friends of Cypress Provincial Park, Hollyburn Ridge Association and North Shore Mountain Bike Association continue to help care for the area.

"We are thrilled to be able to help protect this iconic Vancouver landscape and all of its wonderful values," says Andy Day, CEO of the BC Parks Foundation. "It's the right thing to do at this moment in history--people coming together to do something tangible, positive, and lasting for the planet and people's health."

The Cypress Hollyburn Legacy Fund

Protecting land is only the first step. Long-term stewardship helps ensure these forests, trails and ecosystems remain healthy for generations to come.

The Cypress Hollyburn Legacy Fund was established to support responsible recreation, habitat stewardship and ongoing care of the park. Thanks to a generous matching commitment from the Wilson 5 Foundation, every dollar donated to the fund is matched, helping even more people contribute to the future of this extraordinary landscape.

"I can't think of any better and more lasting way of giving back to the whole community," say Chip and Summer Wilson. "Protecting and taking care of a place like this is good for people and other species now and far into the future. It's a beacon of hope and we hope others will join us in contributing and keeping it beautiful for all to enjoy, forever."
