Jeddah Point

Forested shoreline at Jeddah Point

About this conservation project

Jeddah Point is a spectacular stretch of untouched coastline beside Smuggler Cove Marine Park on the Sunshine Coast.

Long admired by local paddlers and naturalists, the property is home to seals, cormorants, great blue herons and other coastal wildlife. Thanks to the generosity of the landowner and the support of BC Parks Foundation, the Wilson 5 Foundation, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and other partners, Jeddah Point is now protected forever.

How one kayaker made a difference

When retired Parks Canada employee Bill Henwood discovered that Jeddah Point was privately owned, he knew its future wasn't guaranteed.

For four years, Bill researched the property's ownership, wrote letters, tracked down contacts and eventually connected with the owner's legal executor. When the owner decided they wanted the property protected, Bill introduced them to BC Parks Foundation, helping set conservation in motion.

Why is Jeddah Point important?

Jeddah Point is considered one of the most intact stretches of coastline on the lower Sunshine Coast. Its forests and shoreline provide valuable habitat for wildlife while adding to the growing network of protected coastal landscapes surrounding Smuggler Cove.

“This is probably the most untouched, pristine pieces of land on the lower Sunshine Coast,” says Andy Day, CEO of BC Parks Foundation. “It was critical we save it forever, and by working together we did it.”

A shared achievement

Protecting Jeddah Point reflects the power of people who care deeply about the places they love. Thanks to the dedication of local advocates, generous landowners, philanthropic partners and government support, this remarkable piece of British Columbia's coastline will remain protected for generations to come.
