The power of two hours outside

Two hours a week. That’s all it takes. Research shows that people who spend at least two hours in nature each week report significantly better health and wellbeing.

PaRx is Canada’s national, evidence-based nature prescription program. From boosting energy and focus to reducing anxiety, depression, and the risk of chronic disease, time in nature is a powerful prescription for a healthier, happier life.

By bridging healthcare and nature, PaRx makes it simple for healthcare providers to prescribe nature, and for Canadians to follow through. Together, we’re building a culture where time outside is as essential to health as diet, exercise, and sleep.

Goals & objectives

PaRx focuses on four key goals that guide our efforts to connect health and nature while building a healthier Canada.

Build support for parks by connecting people to nature

Promote the evidence that spending time outside improves personal health, reduces healthcare costs, and boosts economic productivity.

Expand nature prescribing across healthcare systems

Lead global conversations on health and nature

Advance international recognition of nature as the “fourth pillar of health,” alongside diet, exercise, and sleep.

“I think we’re collectively remembering what we’ve always known deep down, that being outside helps us feel better.”

In 2020, Terri LeRoux, Interim Chief Administrative Officer of Credit Valley Conservation, and her son Luke set out to complete 100 hikes across Ontario while Luke reduced the medication he had relied on to manage epilepsy. With each hike, time in nature became a tool for managing stress, building confidence, and supporting his health. By their 100th hike, Luke was no longer dependent on medication.

Their journey reflects what research confirms: time outdoors improves physical and mental health, reduces stress, and strengthens wellbeing.

Through stories like theirs, PaRx is showing Canadians that sometimes the most powerful prescription is simply to step outside.
