A Forever Forest: A Community Unites to Protect the Puntledge Forest

Thanks to an extraordinary community effort, the beloved Puntledge Forest is now protected—forever. This inspiring conservation story showcases what can be achieved when people come together to safeguard nature for now, for all, for always.

Nestled in the heart of K’ómoks First Nation’s traditional territory, the Puntledge Forest is a vibrant ecosystem of trees, wetlands, and trails along the Puntledge River. Two years ago, it faced an uncertain future. The forest’s timber rights were at risk of being logged—until the Comox Valley Land Trust (CVLT) stepped in, launching a campaign to protect it.

And what a campaign it was!

The $2.4 million fundraising effort saw an outpouring of support from every corner of the community, proving that when people rally behind a cause they believe in, incredible things happen. Almost $500,000 was raised from donors—individuals who gave what they could, knowing their contributions would help leave a lasting legacy. Matching donations from “forest angels” inspired even more generosity, amplifying the impact. The Government of Canada, Sitka Foundation, and an anonymous foundation provided significant support, and BC Hydro’s Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program helped bring it all home.

At BC Parks Foundation, we are thrilled to have contributed $700,000 to this campaign, in partnership with the Wilson 5 Foundation. “The Puntledge Forest is a remarkable place, rich with biodiversity and deeply valued by the community,” says Andy Day, CEO of BC Parks Foundation. “We’re proud to support this community-led campaign with our partners, and are very grateful to the passionate individuals, donors, and partners who made it possible. Protecting nature is one of the greatest legacies we can leave.”

Because of this collective effort, the forest will continue to grow into old growth, providing habitat for wildlife and a place of refuge for all who walk its trails. Protecting forests like these is also a critical step in mitigating climate change, preserving watersheds, and maintaining the health of our planet.

This is what we do when we come together: we create a future where nature thrives, and where people can experience the magic of wild places for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible. Because of you, the Puntledge Forest will stand tall forever!
