You Helped BC Parks Foundation Win an International Award for Sustainability
BC Parks Foundation was founded on a simple concept: sustainability isn’t about us or any other organization—it’s about you. That’s why, rather than build a big bureaucracy, we set out to build a big, active, and diverse community. Something bigger than all of us.
Now, your remarkable achievements, and the fact that they have been produced through such a diverse and active collective effort, have caught the attention of international leaders working to advance the United Nations Sustainability Goals. Earlier this month, you were awarded a prestigious Catalyst 2030 award, honouring organizations that are leading the way in innovative approaches to achieving sustainability.
“From the beginning we have worked with individuals, volunteers, local organizations, businesses, First Nations and other partners to produce tangible results,” says Andy Day, CEO of BC Parks Foundation. “Our goal has been to empower you to take action on the places and issues you care about, in a spirit of celebration and gratitude. And wow have you responded!”
-
You’ve protected 68 irreplaceable landscapes, ensuring 285,000 acres will thrive forever.
-
You’ve helped families, newcomers, and community groups spend nearly 100,000 hours in nature—exploring, healing, and building connections.
-
You’ve doubled the number of community science observations, which advance biodiversity research and helps safeguard BC’s extraordinary plants, animals, and ecosystems.
-
You’ve helped create new visitor experiences and brought back interpretation in BC Parks, helping people connect with the land, culture, and wildlife.
-
You are proposing and advancing new conservation areas reflecting your culture, traditions and connections to the land.
-
You have brought kids to parks and are now bringing parks to schoolgrounds across BC, boosting health and learning outcomes for students.
"The Catalyst 2030 Award recognizes the incredible leadership force that you as British Columbians have become,” says Day. “A community at its best is something bigger than all of us. It’s people, plants, animals, economies and relationships working together, rowing in the same direction. It’s rooted in our past, it’s determining our experience now, it’s shaping our future. It’s the values we hold dear and the choices we make every day about upholding those values. Take a moment to celebrate this award, and continue to inspire each other and countries around the world to become more sustainable.”
